>> happening in the south bay. san jose firefighters dousing a fire right now started just 90 minutes ago by illegal fireworks. the blaze in tsilved silver creek district broke out not far from several homes and heritage bay place but held just to an acre or so. firefighters say they found these fire crackers at the scene. >> we found only evidence of fireworks used fireworks on the ground right near the grass and then after interviewing one of the residents he did actually

see fireworks go off right here in this area and then saw a group of kids run away from the scene. >>reporter: that label on the box makes clear the problem it says shoots flaming ball. not what you want around dry grass this time of year. police are looking for the kid weighs speak. >> good evening. carolyn has the night off. now with the fourth of july holiday coming wednesday firefighters all over the bay area will be on high alert. illegal fireworks and dry grass. dangerous potentially deadly combination. and in oak licensed tonight the city will face the holiday with fewer open fire stations. allen explains why. >>reporter: illegal fireworks show over west oakland makes the fourth of july a busy time for the oakland fire department. but this year the city will be without 2 engine company each day. just so happens that on july 4th station 3 here in west oakland will be closed. >> in a lot of danger. call another fire department from another part of the city. take that much long tore get over

here and everything. >>reporter: rotating brown out that means a total of 8 firefighters will sit out for a 3 day stretch. budget decision that will save the city 4 million dollars over the fiscal year. >> give up 10% in salary increased retirement age and closing firehouse is something we don't want to see happen. we would love to get the firehouses open. >>reporter: recently the city learned it has a budget surplus. but mayor kwan says it isn't enough to reopen the fire stations. >> the entire surplus hi after i paid occupy was only 3 million so we wouldn't have had enough even if they had given the entire surplus back. >>reporter: fire chief may ignore the brown out on the fourth of july. >> i'm positive that if we have a change in weather pattern that we will probably not brown out or we will just move some stations up to cover where all of our stations will be covere covered. >>reporter: she adds that no station in the wild land will

be closed during the fire season. in oakland, allen wong 7 news. san francisco police are looking for a man they say assaulted an 82-year-old woman l who was simply trying to protect the degrees in golden gate park. happened last friday 11 in the morning on the west bank of stow lake in the park. that's where we are live tonight with details. it's outrageous. >>reporter: yes it's actually kind of surprising. as you know stow lake is popular place to enjoy the birds but that serenity shattered on friday. police say a man shoved that elderly woman as she was trying to tell a child to leave the birds alone. frequent visitors at stow lake some are surprised about a possible assault on every weekday and word of the alleged assault is out among the seniors here each day. >> so many people that walk this lake. if something like this was to happen would have somebody would have went to her rescue

right away. >>reporter: police said alleged assault happened on the west bank of stow lake friday morning. child was had a ration the geese. woman approached the child and told him to leave the bird alone. man who police presume is the gua guard an confronted 82-year-old woman. >> adult male. pushed her. actually made contact with the juvenile and she fell head sher head hit the pavement. >>reporter: police said man and child stayed with the why-year-old woman until her husband arrived and they drove home. but she later started feeling sick. tot 4 to 5 hours she felt ill. possibly throughout the afternoon. she went to the hospital and that's when the police department called to investigate the incident. >>reporter: at st. mary's hospital police say she was admitd with some cuts on her arm and head injury that was potentially life threatening. she has since improved but remains in the hospital. since this is an alledge assault on senior citizen the san francisco police special victim unit is handling the case. investigators there are hoping anyone whether saw what

similar to this one pulled from duty after north carolina c 130 crashed yesterday while fighting a south dakota wildfire. 4 of the 6 craw men with reported killed. c 130 will be inspected before they return to service. the colorado springs fire is now 70% contained. wind may have played a role in toppling large tree tonight in san francisco. take a look at this the tree was just a few inches away from smashing a scooter and landing on a truck. drivers were able to steer clear of the road hazard that blocked all northbound lanes of divide near page street this happened at 7:00 o'clock tonight. good news as big as the tree was, nobody was hurt. easily could have been a different story. >> we were overhead soon after the lights went out at 5:30 this afternoon when high voltage power line fell on 159 avenue. pg&e says gusting winds may have been a factor here. power to about 500 people was restored late this evening. now pg&e trying to restoreicity to 3500

dragged him underneath. you were awfully close to that. >> there must be something more to the story. since he, you know he was trained to be around these animals. >> right. exactly. exactly. we're going to shift gears now. crews battling wildfires in the west have just lost some powerful weapons against the flames. the deadly crash of a military c 130 cargo plane at a fire in south dakota now led to the grounding of seven other air force tankers that were helping spread flame retardant. six air national guard members based in north carolina were on board the c-130 that went down sunday night. at least one crew member was killed. others were injured. while those planes are grounded, the fight continues on the front lines. near colorado springs, firefighters coming off a grueling 16-hour shifts are getting a thank you for their heroic work with people turning out to cheer them on. the crews are battling the devastating waldo canyon fire that has killed two people and destroyed almost 350 homes.
